about

IS/WAS NUMBER ONE:

A new bi-monthly digital compilation / “sonic zine” / documentary soundtrack of Portland and its ever present changes.

Any and all bands/musicians are encouraged to submit to IS/WAS. The first 12 submissions to each issue are included no questions asked.

All genres, skill levels, demos, studio work, established, unestablished are accepted. The only rules are that the artists must either live, rehearse, or record in Portland.

There is no mission statement, but this magazine is very likely a subconscious, vague, and psychic response to the city's drastic changes; which have pushed artists away, encouraged commercialism, and closed down iconic venues, bars, and houses. It has subtly changed the dynamics of our music community, from a very open one, to one with fewer opportunities -- where paths are harder to find, and/or must be carved out.

This issue was incredibly fun to put together, as I was able to slightly ‘curate’ it by asking friends and musicians I love to submit. I was very fortunate that it had such a good response; and very happy to have a couple submissions from artists I never heard.

Genres/styles on this issue include shoegaze, noise, ambient, psych, folk, electro, acoustic, and indie. Songs include brand new tracks, contemporary tracks, and old tracks. I'm very excited about it.

The artwork is a screen press by the very talented Jesse Siegel, a member of Worksound international.

Anyone wishing to submit to the next issue may do so at iswasmedia@gmail.com

If you would like to download rather than stream, you may do so for free. All donations for downloads will be passed on to local advocacy groups.

Thank you for your time, for listening, and most importantly for supporting local artists.

And welcome to IS/WAS issue number ONE !!!!!!
